Online bookseller AuthorsBookshop wanted to provide a venue for indie authors to read their books to an interested audience. The only problem was, as it is an online bookseller, AuthorsBookshop does not have a venue at which it could host readings.
So AuthorsBookshop founder Brad Grochowski began to cast about for a solution - where could a bookstore without a store host book readings?
It then occurred to him that there were many locally owned shops - coffee shops, taverns, restaurants and retail shops, that a) he loves to spend time in, b) are always looking for new customers and c) would provide a great venue for book readings!
He then set out to find local partners that would host the readings, and landed at Koba Cafe in Locust Point, Baltimore. Its friendly and comfortable atmosphere was perfect for an evening of indie literature.
But Brad didn't want to stop there. He has made arrangements for the events to be live webcast here at BookBurn.com, providing national exposure to the books and venues. He is also inviting local musicians to perform as well, adding even more local flavor and exposure to the events!
But why are you "burning" books?
Well, because it sounds forbidden and exciting!
Forever, the act of burning books has been a symbol of oppression and censorship. We feel that indie books have been effectively censored for many years by the stigma that has been held against indie publishing.
But this is a new age! We are breaking out of the foul reputation of "vanity presses" by publishing truly amazing indie books. And so, just as "indie" has become a badge of honor in the film and music worlds, so too shall it be in publishing... if we have anything to say about it.
So we are co-opting the idea of "burning" books, and we are burning them our way - by bringing light to great literature, regardless of how small or undiscovered the publisher may be!
Joins us as we burn some awesome indie books!
